MECHANICVILLE - Mrs. Nina Luther Chauvin, 89, formerly of Harris Avenue, died peacefully on Sunday morning, March 5 at the Glendale Nursing Home, in Glenville following a long illness. Nina was born in Mechanicville, March 9, 1927 and was a life long resident. She graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1945. She attended the St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam and became a Registered Nurse in 1951. She began her career at St. Claire's Hospital in Schenectady until she and her husband, Dr. Robert E. Chauvin of 53 years started their family. Once her 5 children were grown, she resumed her nursing career in 1974 at Memorial Hospital in Albany for just a short time. In the early 2000's, however, Nina's natural care giving ability returned when her husband Bob was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She spent endless hours with him making sure he was well taken care of and comfortable until his passing in 2006. Prior to his illness, she and Bob spent almost every moment together, an almost inseparable pair.
While they were both active, Nina and Bob enjoyed traveling in their motor home together. They enjoyed going to Maine in the summers and Florida in the winters. Nina enjoyed taking painting classes and was an avid and talented painter. She was a faithful communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Stillwater.
Nina was the daughter of the late Edward and Florence Pohl Luther. She was predeceased by her eldest son Robert A. Chauvin, who died in 1980, and a brother Edward Luther, who died in 2011. Survivors include her children and their families, a daughter Anita Chauvin of St. Petersburg, FL; sons David and wife Karen Chauvin of Massena; Paul and wife Roberta Chauvin of Coram; and Michael and wife Lynn Chauvin of Cobleskill. Nina was also blessed with 5 grandchildren: Trevor, Cassandra, Paul, Ryan, and Jon Paul Chauvin. Nina also leaves behind her sister Carol and brother-in- law Vincent Lanzone of Mechanicville; sister-in-law Patricia Luther of Malta, brother-in-law Marty and Bettina Chauvin of Mechanicville and sister-in-law Margaret Rinehart of California along with many nieces and nephews.
Nina's family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Nurses, Staff and community of the Glendale Nursing Home who worked in the Mohawk Trail Unit for their loving care, compassion, and concern they have given their Mother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 11 at 12:00 at All Saints on the Hudson (St. Peter's) Church, 895 Hudson Ave., Stillwater with burial to follow at St. Paul's Cemetery in Mechanicville. An hour of gathering for family and friends will be held at the Church, prior to the mass, starting at 11:00 am.
