MECHANICVILLE - Alfred A. Perrotta, 96, of Chestnut St., died Wednesday, Feb. 8th at Samaritan Hospital, Troy, after a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Mechanicville, Born August 2, 1920, son of the late Nicola and Rose Montello Perrotta, Al was sadly predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Rose Festa Perrotta in 1981.
An Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, staff sergeant Al was a waist gunner on a B-17, stationed in England, and completed over 50 bombing missions over Germany in 9 months, earning several Air Medals and Distinguished Unit Badge, coming home in Sept of 1945.
Al was a longtime grocer, owned and operated his family’s Perrotta’s Market on Chestnut St. retiring in 1985.
A member of a number of veterans and civic organizations, such as the Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks lodge, American Legion, Peters-Purcell Ital. Amer. Veterans Post, the Italian Fraternal Society and Senior Citizens all of Mechanicville, and Assumption-St. Paul Church.
Al enjoyed taking many bus trips with friends, going to casinos and playing cards and crossword puzzles.
Though never graced with children, Al loved all nieces and nephews and his large extended family.
Survivors include his youngest brother Nick and Catherine “Babe” Perrotta of Mechanicville, in-laws, many nieces and nephews including his caretaker for a number of years JoAnn and her son Matthew Rocco.
In addition to his parents and wife, Al was predeceased by siblings: Cecelia DeCrescente, Joseph, Frank, Carl, Louis and Aleck Perrotta.
AS Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 No. Main St. Mechanicville. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Friday from 4-7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to American Cancer Society, Wounded Warrior Project or a charity on one’s choice, in respectful memory of Alfred A. Perrotta.
